In the ever-evolving landscape of education and in the 30-year history of Renaissance, our leadership model has remained the same. This includes the Collaborative School Governance (CSG) committee. Inclusive and solutions-oriented, this advisory group identifies and makes recommendations about school initiatives to the Board of Trustees. The goal is to elevate the voices of stakeholders, foster a sense of community, and enrich the educational experience for everyone involved.
Who’s a stakeholder? Anyone committed to the ongoing improvement of our school community. That includes current and former teachers, students, alumni, parents and guardians, and administrators. While anyone is able to attend a CSG meeting, the core committee is made up of elected and appointed members.
Here are a few benefits of the CSG at Renaissance:
Inclusivity and Diversity
The Renaissance CSG ensures that diverse voices are heard. By involving teachers, students, parents, and administrators in decision-making processes, the school benefits from a rich tapestry of perspectives. This inclusivity promotes a more comprehensive understanding of the needs and aspirations of the entire school community.
Past Initiative: Increasing the availability of diverse, inclusive, age-appropriate books in our school libraries.
Shared Responsibility
When advisory groups are collaborative, the responsibility for the success of the school is shared among various stakeholders. Past Initiative: Making CSG leadership positions 2-year appointments. Increasing the duration of leadership of the committee decreases turnover, allowing for the successful follow-through of longer-term initiatives such as rebuilding our school community following the pandemic.

Decisions are informed by a broader range of experiences and insights, leading to solutions that are more practical and sustainable. Past initiative: High School Unwrapped, an annual presentation for and by prospective high school students presented internally to our 8th-grade students. HS Unwrapped lets middle school students take a peek inside all the amazing things they can expect when they enter 9th grade.

Teachers play a pivotal role in the success of any educational institution. TRCS’s CSG encourages professional development opportunities and a culture of continuous learning. When teachers are actively involved in decision-making processes, they feel valued and are more likely to contribute innovative ideas that enhance the overall quality of education for students.
Past Initiative: A curriculum audit using an equity lens. Through a CSG subcommittee, TRCS studied teaching and learning scenarios in which social justice awareness could be infused into regular instruction. (Example: exploring the historical-cultural-social significance of circles in geometry class.)

Past Initiative: High School Unwrapped. HS Unwrapped lets middle school students take a peek inside TRCS High School. This initiative was borne out of parents’ desire to better understand the truly special features of TRCS High School from the perspectives of the students themselves. HS Unwrapped allows current 8th graders to interact with HS students to learn about what “really goes on” in high school.
Adaptability to Change
Education is not static; it evolves with societal changes and technological advancements. The CSG facilitates adaptability to these changes. By involving stakeholders in the decision-making process, our school can respond more effectively to emerging trends, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the challenges of the future.
Past Initiative: Going virtual. Upon discovering the benefits that online meetings afford some families who have difficulty attending meetings in person, this pandemic practice has endured. The purpose of the CSG is to enlist the thought leadership of past and present stakeholders, regardless of where they are currently located. Proximity to the physical location of the school is therefore not a limiting factor when it comes to access to shared leadership.
Fostering a Positive School Culture
A collaborative governance model contributes to the development of a positive school culture. When all members of the school community feel heard and valued, a sense of trust and camaraderie flourishes. This positive atmosphere extends to the classrooms, creating an optimal learning environment for students.
Past Initiative: Revisiting the school’s founding mission when full-time in-person learning resumed. TRCS is one of the oldest charter schools in NYC and living our mission is of critical importance, as it defines how we practice our humanistic values in the many spaces and places where TRCS culture thrives.
