TRCS 2 Elmhurst
Continuing the legacy of The Renaissance Charter School in Jackson Heights.
The Renaissance Charter School 2 is modeled after our founding school, a public charter school located in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York. Educators, parents and community leaders founded our school over 20 years ago, concerned about the future of New York City.
Renaissance is based on the conviction that a change in the destiny of a single individual can lead to a change in the destiny of a community, nation, and ultimately humankind.
Our mission as a planned Kindergarten to 12th grade school is to foster educated, responsible, humanistic young leaders who will through their own personal growth spark a renaissance in New York. Its graduates will be global citizens with an abiding respect for peace, human rights, the environment, and
sustainable development.
Student Body
TRCS 2 mirrors the multi-cultural tableau that defines Queens and District 24, welcoming all students and families without regard to race, ethnicity, creed or national origin.
Many students enter Renaissance as English Language Learners (ELL), and most quickly gain proficiency. TRCS 2 also has an inclusion model for both ELL and special education students. The majority of the students come from the neighborhoods of Maspeth, East Elmhurst, Corona, Jackson Heights, Astoria, and Long Island City. These communities are characterized by the rich ethnic diversity that will be reflected in our student body.
History
The Renaissance Charter School 2’s doors opened in September 2020, first sharing a space with Martin Luther High School in Maspeth while building its permanent home in Elmhurst, Queens. TRCS 2’s home campus opened in Fall 2022, where its growing student body will include Kindergarten through 4th grade and 9th grade in 2023-2024.
Message From The Principal
Hello and welcome to The Renaissance Charter Schools website. It is with great pride that we offer you this virtual tour of the exciting spin-off of one of New York City ‘s oldest charter schools. Renaissance marked its 20th Anniversary in 2013, having also opened their doors to students in a co-located space in Long Island City, just like we are doing this September in Maspeth. With the exciting addition of our second school, we are on our way to giving a new neighborhood of families the opportunity to nurture their children with the Renaissance experience from the very beginning of their academic journey.
As we take the first step into the new school, we need to revisit the vision that unites our two schools. One particular line in the vision – “Renaissance is committed to graduating individuals who are competent, powerful thinkers, engaged citizens, and life-long learners who will create the renaissance of New York” provokes further thought. When you read this part of our vision statement, I hope it creates a series of questions for you such as – What skills do our students need to be competent and competitive in this global world we live in? Where do standardized examinations fit into the vision? How does arts education support the mission? What does it mean to be a powerful thinker or an engaged citizen? How do we blend our humanistic philosophy with continually meeting and exceeding high standards? What type of supports do parents need to be partners in this vision? How do we empower our students to live the vision? How do we help foster happiness at school?
I hope you will join us on this journey, and I look forward to welcoming you in September.
Everett Boyd, TRCS 2 Principal
