Rensizzle Week 2023

One School, One Week, One BIG IMPACT!

October 23-27, 2023

What Is Rensizzle?

“Rensizzle Week” – a unique opportunity for students and staff alike to suspend traditional teaching and learning for 5 days and learn by doing. Regular classes are canceled, and 6th-12 grade students come in at 9:00 AM for Rensizzle activities.

What's the Purpose of Rensizzle?

The purpose of our ‘unique to Renaissance’ Rensizzle program is to let students learn as much as they can about their chosen area of study by doing interdisciplinary and multi-sensory work. The Rensizzle clusters are suggested by students and staff alike, and students are placed in one of their top 5 choices. The clusters include academic, cultural, culinary, scientific, artistic and technological areas of study. In keeping with our mission statement we ask students to look at their group’s experiences through our core values of sustainability, social justice, and global citizenship.

Why Do We Do Rensizzle?

Passions are translated into action during Rensizzle: there are students who love to cook, sew, and design—clothes, buildings, and furniture; there are students who want to build things, learn about architecture and engineering, learn all kinds of dance styles, and create social justice documentaries. As we tell our students when we survey them for their interests, “There is bound to be something you DO and want to share, are curious about and want to learn more, or have never done and want the challenge!”

Policies and Procedures

The school day begins at 9:00 AM. Students should not report to school before 9 AM unless they have a trip that departs early. Attendance will be taken each morning.

The school day ends at 3:10 PM. Students should plan to return to school after their field trips unless otherwise stated.

Permission slips, waivers, and details about trips–including those that fall outside regular school hours or extend before and/or after the school day–will be sent to families before Rensizzle begins.

***

Students learn collaboratively during Rensizzle, so attendance and participation are key! When students arrive late or are absent, they lose valuable opportunities to learn with their peers in exciting new ways. Rensizzle is still school!

For this reason, this year students will receive a grade of “Satisfactory” or “Unsatisfactory” on their report card at the end of Rensizzle Week. The criteria are simple: attend school, show up on time, participate, and be respectful to others.

Students who arrive late are required to stay at school. They will work on an assignment related to their Rensizzle unit. They will be supervised by a teacher and will be required to eat lunch in the cafeteria. Their work will be included in the group’s final presentation/portfolio.

Due to safety reasons, students may not “opt-out” or join other groups’ activities. They must stay in their group for the duration of Rensizzle.

We look forward to this year’s Rensizzle and hope you are too. If you have any questions, please reach out to Rensizzle Coordinator Meredith Hinshaw-Chaney at meredithhinshaw@rencharter.org.

2023 Rensizzle Units

21st Century NYC

In the process of our exploration/discovery, we will take students on a historical & cultural odyssey where they will examine NYC prior to the 21st century, investigating the Empire State: how/why it came to be, and more importantly, in the process of examining the past and present, foreshadow where it is headed as the future rapidly approaches.

Throughout the week we will explore/discover some of the primary aspects of NYC, which lie in its fabric: parks, museums, historical and cultural sites, etc. Over the course of the week, we will be sure to examine the bedrock of NYC – immigrants/immigration (tackling the current political issues/controversy – migrants/asylum seekers, etc.), highlighting that Queens is the MOST DIVERSE place on this planet, as per verifiable evidence – the U.S. Census. We will also explore who the varying immigrants of NYC are and why they came. Push & Pull Theory, varying languages/cultures transplanted here, and how they have played instrumental roles in helping to transform NY and will continue to do so as the populace changes over time throughout the 21st century onward.

Architecture

Ever wonder what it takes to design and construct the many amazing buildings and structures in NYC? Through a partnership with the Center for Architecture, this hands-on Rensizzle will expose you to the fundamentals of architectural design. In addition to working out of the CFA’s workshop in Manhattan, you will meet prominent professional architects responsible for some of NYC’s notable buildings. You’ll also learn about the history of your neighborhood through the buildings that define its streets. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves while sparking your imagination through this engaging Rensizzle!

Cycling

This year, the Cycling Rensizzle will explore NYC by Citi Bike! Thanks to Citi’s equity program, we will provide free bikes and helmets to riders aged 16 and over. Experienced cyclists under the age of 16 are welcome to apply. We will learn about bike safety, the benefits of cycling, and how cycling contributes to a positive community. We will be working with and learning from different bike advocacy and activist groups as we clock up to 100 miles of road over the course of the week! Learning will also encompass how to build a safer bike-friendly city. This will include speaking with political officers regarding what the city is doing to ensure the expansion of safe biking in our city.

Notes: Electric bikes will not be available. Cyclists who opt to use their own bicycles will be required to provide proof of a tune-up prior to Rensizzle.

Filmmaking

Wonder what goes into making a film? Learn the ins and outs of making your own short film with a professional filmmaker! In this Rensizzle, you’ll gain firsthand experience of how stories get made for the silver screen. In addition to learning technical skills such as camera framing and editing, you’ll visit studios to get behind-the-scenes views of some of the most iconic television shows in American history.

Film Reviews

Movie lovers and film critics unite! Love movies and talking about how good the last thing you watched was? In this unit, students will discover new films and modern-day classics. Over the course of the week, we will watch movies in theaters across the city. Then, we will reflect on what we did, saw, heard, ate, and felt as we compose movie reviews for publication on a website in an effort to build a portfolio for future professional writing opportunities.

Geology

Discover how glaciers shaped the bedrock at the top of Bear Mountain and in Central Park to create the iconic New York City skyline. Hike to the top of Bear Mountain and along the way, unearth the evidence that supports glacial activity in New York. Experience the world’s largest collection of minerals and fossils that glow (floures) under blacklight. Go deep into the earth and back in time, to explore the mysteries of a natural cavern and a man-made copper mine. Sift through sand to discover minerals and gems, search the ground for the different types of sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. Then tell your peers what you know!

We will engage in a debate on technology versus natural solutions to slow down climate change, and we will get up close and personal with hundreds of butterflies at the Natural History Museum!  Next, we’ll design a real urban garden using the principles of permaculture to guide us. We’ll get our hands dirty as we plant our own flowers and trees in unsuspecting places so that when spring comes, your Rensizzle work will bring smiles to the faces of neighbors and friends — while also creating “waystations” for the birds and butterflies that migrate through our City annually. We will be creating a “where to go” slideshow with all of the things we experience over Rensizzle week; letting the TRCS family know where to go and what to do. All students in the group will be responsible for certain parts of the slide show.

In Outdoor Adventures, students will spend their time navigating various outdoor environments, ropes courses, climbs, and even archery! TRCS Fashion Week

It’s no secret that New York is a major player in the fashion industry and the birthplace of Fashion Week. The city has a unique creative vitality that is unmatched anywhere else on the globe, and it is also without a doubt one of the top shopping destinations in the world. In the Big Apple, style is all about self-assurance and dressing for a cause. The attire in the city shows the city’s enormous diversity and originality. The unwritten rule in NYC is to wear all black if you’re unsure.

Let’s explore the history and current state of fashion as it relates to culture, art, and sustainability; while building on our own creativity and artistry. We will explore NYC fashion hubs, the Fashion Institute, and finally show our expressiveness by creating our own designs and watching them come to life!
